HOW DREAMS FLY

How do I venture into the world of business with a new invention?  I will be getting guidance from SCORE, the venture incubation advisors.  New ideas for funding are appearing even in this lean market.  OrionCraft is intended to be a non-profit for others to contribute and discover their own product line to profit along with my project.  Contribute your own ideas and products and join the enterprise!

I am preparing to incorporate Exodus Aerospace as a commercial venture, and need to consider a path to profit.  We are going for a grass roots approach by designing models for testing, publicity, and for sale.  Model airplane and rocketry are merged in this proposal for more interesting market potential.  By publicizing the adventure of this development we hope to find sponsors and donors.  Bill Colburn’s SORAC amateur rocketry group funded several large rockets in this way.  Crowd funding is a possible new path for volunteer funding.  Congress is considering opening this to tech ventures for equity offerings.

Tell me what you think of soliciting funds for OrionCraft  that returns only minor product rewards like T-shirts, pocket protectors, and certificates of participation.  This is legal now for small projects.  OrionCraft may provide a start for one or more profitable spin off ventures this way.  This may enable funding for some serious professional contributions.  Later we may be allowed to offer equity for funding if the legislation passes.

We may be able to program a design into X-Plane software for sale to other users.  X-Plane is recognized as both a powerful aircraft design tool, and an FAA certified flight training software.  Its users are aviation savvy and often in the business.  This software was used by Scaled Composites to help design Space Ship One.  It is a good design tool and a publicity tool that will generate cash flow with no material investment.  I want the programmer to discover the profit potential of this and make a marketable product.  X-Plane users will be able to buy the program and fly it on their own computer.  This will return publicity to our venture.  Part of marketing is visibility; who has heard of in-line staging before this?

Flying hardware will need components that are marketed by our consultants, and I hope everyone can consider participation in a subcontracting role.  By avoiding employment we can reduce overhead and tax issues.  Everyone can find profit by advancing their own product sales in commercial applications such as the model sales.  No one has to be non-profit if we line up our market and fabrication plans properly.  You can work under your own LLC as we learn the process.  My time line for a solo development is one man hour per man hour of work needed.  If we have two workers that becomes one half man hour for each of us.  The time line is shortened with more workers.  We can use volunteers for partnership equity or donations for professional help.

The first flying model will be a movie star for publicity films.  The first product from Ferretworks promises to deliver good content for promotions.  We are building a radio controlled model now.  When we have a flying prototype, we can begin talking to model vendors about commercial sales of the model.  We can then offer further incentives to market a jet and rocket powered model.  Airplane modelers occasionally seek the exotic design.  Rocketry fans are often seeking a unique design, and this overlap of airplanes and rockets is unique.  The public can support a grass roots space venture by owning a model of the dream for their own enjoyment.  Even these models offer a great engineering and development challenge.

We have advisors with great experience in airplane modeling including turbine and rocket powered variants.  I hope we can discover systems to help jet and rocket modelers to extend control and reduce losses in their high performance sport.  They too are interested in speed records and safety.

We must look to prototypes with real market potential.  We are targeting a fast track to reusable small satellite launchers.  We will identify steps that increase visibility to achieve viability in the market.  There are products which offer small steps in that direction.  Distant products may include a fuel efficient two stage commercial airliner, and suborbital transports.

Engineering schools may help optimize the design for this unique wing body type.  Our consultants and sponsors can help resolve guidance, control, propulsion, fuel management, and many other issues in this small scale development.  Working with experienced model vendors will help us discover quality control disciplines we will need later.  A University research project may introduce us to more sophisticated methods needed for future space applications.

We will gather interest at air shows, rocket racing, and space conferences.  Every avenue to publicity can open a door for more funding interest.  Perhaps we can engage the media, magazines, web sites, etc.  The Discovery Channel might have fun with a grass roots space shot.  It’s fun to be at these shows, and participation is even better.
We are looking for motivated entrepreneurs hoping to build up a real career opportunity.  We obviously need a lot of work done even in the early model building.  I can live on my social security for a long time, so I don’t need much funding for my use.  The company can use funding for materials, and for paid design work.  You will invest in your own specialty area as contributors and sub contractors, and we will target markets together.  We can get market potential from vendors who build models of this type now, and collaborate with them in refining the product.

We have a good foundation of contributors now.  Keith Sievers an advisor and is the President of the Jet Pilot Organization, the turbine modelers.  Ferretworks is marketing film tracking, and controls for small aircraft.  Micro Aerospace Solutions offers guidance, thrusters, and avionics for spacecraft and UAV applications.  Embry Riddle Aeronautical University may participate later.  Bill Colburn is a hybrid rocket expert with man rated systems under development.  I see potential for everyone to find a little profit in some role in this exploration.  There can be potential to even sub contract some even bigger jobs, possibly to the major aero manufacturers.  Or perhaps they will buy us out?

We will negotiate non-disclosure agreements, vendor/supplier contracts, and  sponsor donations.  Even if the concept is not perfect for every mission, we do have a role in history as participants in the new space age, rather than bystanders.  I have spent my career watching for opportunities in designs, letting the engineers know where we may find answers.  I hope we can explore this possibility and find a few answers of our own.  Experience suggests that every new technology finds a niche in the market in time.
