CAPTAIN’S LOG ENTRY EARTH DATE 2000 HRS 02 MAY 2012

BOLDER IN BOULDER

We woke up in the Fairgrounds campsite to see snow covered mountains and a horse show in progress.  This is the west!  By Monday we were ready for first contact with the aerospace department at the University of Colorado.  I had one e-mail from them expressing interest, but I could not find anyone in their office on Monday.  Tuesday yielded a little success, and by Wednesday I had experienced some promising discussions.

I have no illusions about fielding a radical proposal for space access with my credentials and limited funding.  But a good student design project might generate more data about the concepts and some interesting ideas for improvements.  Academic credentials may aid future bids for funding and make the concept more visible to aerospace professionals.

The University of Colorado has already done work on a drop test model for Space Dev’s Dream Chaser.  As I passed by the engineering building, I saw a crew working on a garage door.  The model of Dream Chaser was still living in the basement and posed for my photos.  It would be great to have students model a refined version of the LEAP design and test launch and reentry behavior.

Boulder Colorado offers more retail stores and recreation than Mojave.  It may have more winter sports than my old bones need though!  I see more Toyota FJ Cruisers like mine than any other state.  I guess I can visit Arizona or Mojave in the winter if I get frostbite.

A productive week will wrap up with barbeque Thursday and trailer repairs.  I got the vehicle serviced Wednesday so we are ready for liftoff 0900 Friday May 4th.

PROFESSORS IN AIRFRAMES AND PROPULSION MAY USE THE LEAP CONCEPT FOR A SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT.  A PREVIOUS PROJECT IS SEEN IN THE LOWER LEVEL AND REPRESENTS THE QUALITY THAT WOULD MATURE THIS CONCEPT GREATLY.
