CAPTAIN’S LOG ENTRY EARTH DATE 2000 HRS 22 MAY 2012

May 22, 2012

THIS IS HARD TO MISS…but in case you did:

Congratulations to Spacex; they launched a private rocket to the space station if you haven’t heard.  We may not have to rely on the Russians for space access now.  We also don’t have to rely on expensive traditional methods to develop space rockets.  One brave soul invested his personal fortune to enable engineers to make improvements to the way we do business in space.

Elon Musk possesses a sense of business and technology that allowed him to see a better future.  Others have been working towards similar goals against huge resistance.  It was hugely important for the first venture to have success to enable all that will follow.  Those who would build a space ship are often targets of the nattering nabobs of negativism.

We will do well to remember that in the 1930s the economy was in a state of despair.  At that same time a golden age of aviation was unfolding to lift our sagging spirits.  The glamour of aerodynamic new aircraft leached over into the auto industry, and pointed to a streamlined future.  That hope would prove priceless when hostilities drew the world into another world war.

We can be grateful to those investors who see the future with hope, and act to employ problem solvers to build a brighter future.  In case you haven’t noticed, space access is providing new industry for communications, entertainment, defense, and environmental protection.  If our other industries are moving overseas, we may need a growth industry to survive.

The economy does not exist to provide a tax base for space access.  Space access exists to provide the basis for our economy.  Congratulations to Elon Musk for the vision to boldly and affordably go where none have gone before.  And congratulations to the Spacex team that delivered real engineering solutions to their employer.

I submit these old images of the Falcon 1 as my first clue where this was going.  Can you see the quality of engineering that was evidenced early in this program?  They didn’t overinvest in a huge vehicle prematurely, but built in respectable increments.  But every step was a real flight hardware test item.  This has been a great engineering development project.  Savor the journey and hold a steady course towards the goal Spacex!

We who follow on shall be inspired by this professionalism and endeavor to put more of your colleagues to work in the future.
