THE VOYAGE PAST

November 16, 2012

We have already published a long history of building, and the “Captain’s Log” of a voyage that emulated a deep space mission for one small navigator.  The distance for an underfunded dreamer to low earth orbit is equal to the starship Voyager reaching the Delta Quadrant.  I will need some help from above!  https://exospace.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/captains-log-voyager-2012/

Briefly, the voyage may seem to be a fantasy trip, but it tied together a long trail of connections in the new space industry.  After years of free design services to rocket builders, I am witnessing their realities shaping up.  Since the early days of the X-Prize we have seen these people at the EAA Airventure air show, and finally fleshing out their visions in flying hardware.

Before a new solution is commercialized it must suffer the agony of failure.  I contributed drafting and design for other’s ideas, which did not always get funded.  We did not get paid during these formative efforts.  But I got familiar with the community of builders and planners who returned to me a great learning experience.  I was not a witness of the X-Prize, but rather working in the pit crew for the teams.  We were participants in the race.  Now I needed to find help to evaluate my own ideas.  I set out to challenge the new space industry with a new solution.  Captain Mitty has launched the starship “Transport” for a distant future.

The path covered the Mojave Spaceport, the FAR rocketry test site, eSpace, the University of Colorado, DAR Corporation, Frontier Astronautics, and the EAA Airventure show.  A permanent base was chosen in business friendly Wyoming.  Furniture was moved to a new house, and new products are defined.

Here are a few rocketeers and their projects I passed along the way:

BURT RUTAN’S SCALED COMPOSITES, AND BILL COLBURN WITH A “MICRO” ROCKET

PAUL BREED AT FAR SITE AND LARAMIE ROSE AT FRONTIER ASTRONAUTICS

DREAMCHASER AND MODEL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO

A B-58 AT CHANUTE FIELD IL AND THE SYNERGY AIRCRAFT AT OSHKOSH

Walter Mitty was distracted from his daydreams by his mundane reality.  In this voyage I have confirmed that there are builders and doers who will eliminate the ways not to go to space.  The line between fantasy and reality is becoming blurred by new possibilities.  Captain Mitty leaves the starship “Transport” for an EVA…
