AIR TRAFFIC

June 28, 2013

HORIZONTAL LAUNCH IS MOVING AHEAD.

I saw a recent launch video of the Orbital Sciences Pegasus with a lot of data included. There are data displays that point out the altitude and speed changes with each of many stage firings. This provides information about the only REAL orbital space plane ever flown from a horizontal launch. This also provides some metrics for scaling. We can observe the small size of the Pegasus compared to the lifter aircraft. The actual orbital portion is actually tiny, as it is the fourth stage of the Pegasus. In-line staging offers some gains to improve that size differential a bit. The booster still has to be huge for a large orbiter. Compare this to the much larger Stratolaunch, which also uses an aircraft stage, a winged second stage, and wingless upper stages. Most are not reusable.

We need to target a preliminary study paper that can outline a reasonable development vehicle. We have real assets to deliver the sizing and orbital mechanics for this mission. Later we can also deliver assets for aerodynamic analysis and prototype development. I want to close in on a reachable goal for a passenger ferry that can operate on available airfields. An alternative may be a fairly simple rocket rail that does not drive any massive investment loads. I compare this development vehicle to a “DC-1” variant which investors may ask us to up-size if they see market demand coming. For the initial paper study we want a low-cost preview by our well credentialed investigation team. I hope to generate a price for such an initial study shortly. Meanwhile we continue to see a massive amount of detailed investigation traffic at the Exodus blog. https://exospace.wordpress.com/

I am still getting some design work done on the next flight models.  I was slowed by shoulder surgery and mundane chores but we are gaining speed again.  The builders and CAD support are preparing facilities and capacity for next phase work too.  I hope to add Solid Edge CAD tools before we move on to more sophisticated designs.

Also:  we still have hats, shirts, pocket protectors, and lab coats available!
