SHAKEDOWN BREAKDOWN

October 1, 2013

SHAKE AND BREAK

Well we went on a second shakedown trip…or should we call it a breakdown trip?  Well, this was a minor breakdown.  Overall this was a successful, fun, productive outing.  After getting groceries at Walmart we went west of Laramie into the Medicine Bow National Forest.  It was still open, and may yet be if the government is still paying the bills.  West of Medicine Bow Mountain and the Snowy Range are some great dirt roads where one may camp without fees.

In the fall the colors are great and the crowds are gone.  Only the occasional hunter breaks the solitude of a beautiful fall day.  I set up the satellite internet dish while dog was pulling guard duty…protecting the world from bunny rabbits.  This camp allowed us a great sunset walk and a night of wonderful quiet.  There were no sirens, Harley Davidsons, freeway trucks, or barking dogs.  Mine was passed out exhausted!

This time I had all my computer equipment and supplies and got a little work done.  I did experience a change of scenery outside the window in the morning.  Jack Frost had made a late night sneak attack and snow was in the forecast.  We had a fun walk in the white stuff and brewed a fresh pot of hot coffee.  This fueled a productive day of blueprint production.  By mid-afternoon I decided not to risk another night and possibly getting snowed in.  I chickened out and pointed west to the comfort of a full service RV park in Saratoga.

After setup and supper I prepared for a long awaited hot shower.  Murphy’s Law appeared as a dry water line coming from the water heater.  No hot shower tonight.  This makes me think that Mars travelers should all be mechanical engineers at least.  Even if you can print 3D parts you have to know how to bolt things together, and why the stuff isn’t working.  And you may have to fix the 3D printer!  Hopefully you will have a good supply of printer materials before you leave too.

In the absence of a plumber I used an alternative solution.  I carry gallon milk bottles with water for flushing the toilets.  This saves water and gives a better flush to prevent clogs.  Since those bottles are stored along the wall next to the cabin heat vent, they become almost hot water.  I had a fine two gallon bottle bath in the morning.  This is not as great as the adventure of Apollo 13, but it sure was a treat for me!

I called for RV repair sites, and discovered one who had come to my rescue last year.  Albany RV repair of Laramie was willing to fix my valve on a Sunday afternoon.  So after church in Saratoga we got the fix done in less than an hour on our way home.  Now we have an improved loading list and one of a few needed repairs completed.  We are now unloaded, and preparing the plans for the long trip to Arizona in October.

Hey…future Mars colonists:  Take time to see the earth before you leave it!
