NEW MEXICO EASTBOUND EARTH DATE 18 OCTOBER 2013

October 26, 2013

WESTWARD HO!

Leaving Sugarite State Park we see a change of scenery as mountain forests yield to a dryer landscape.  There are still a few glimpses of snow far up on the highest peaks but things are warming up a bit.  The west end of the state will bring us to the Cibola National Forest and real isolation.  The forest roads are open in spite of the federal shutdown, and camping in the wilds is still permitted according to the website.

AND LAVA FLOWS.  DON’T DOSE OFF WHILE DRIVING HERE!  LAVA FLOWS ARE JAGGED AND BROKEN WITH DEEP CREVASSES THAT WOULD GRIND A CAR RIGHT UP.  BUT WORSE THINGS ARE NOT FAR AHEAD!

FOR NOW WE HEAD SOUTH (AND UP!) TO THE NATIONAL FOREST

VENUS, THE EVENING STAR IS UP…WAY UP!

As I discover the ability of my camera, I see beauty in our universe.  There is no denying the visual attraction of space exploration.  Earth exploration offers the extra senses of smell and sound with freedom to explore outside the man made environment.  EVAs as on the earth are precious and rare in this universe.

If you are considering that one way trip to Mars, tour the earth for a while first.  It has been a long time since the frontier days of the west.  But we who live here should respect the power of nature and our smallness compared to the mountains and the weather.  And the heavens dwarf our greatest imaginations.  People still die in this wilderness and that one above us has vastly more power than the forces here on the earth.  Go prepared…vaya con Dios!
