SPACE CADET’S LOG, STARDATE WHATEVER

That’s Saturday April 26th here!

Well the CAD tools are still in limbo, but I am still using the Geomagic for now.  I drove to Cheyenne six times now, each a full day trip for computer issues.  When things are slow I can investigate marketing paths.  I think I have six projects on the burners now, but they range from space ships to computers and electric bicycles.  On the high end I am posting articles on the future of space access on the “Wings to Space” blog.  http://horizontalspace.wordpress.com/

I know that horizontal launch is not a serious contender for government programs, but there is interest in the civilian market now.  The growth of new space ventures is perking interest from investors in a flat economy.  It’s getting less risky if investors can identify viable opportunities.  If a small launcher gets funded, the defense department is interested.  They just don’t know how to bid for such contracts without gross waste and big contractors.

The vehicle we are looking at is targeting the best use of horizontal launch; the manned passenger services of the future.  As more ventures establish settlement, mining and tourist projects comfortable flights to orbit will be needed.  Reusability is still being done with winged spacecraft, and horizontal launch is the best use of wings.  Vertical launch may still be the best way to loft cargo, but passengers need a few comforts and safety factors.

The vehicle latest design theorizes salvaging components of past NASA vehicles, much as the Space Launch System proposes to do.  The difference is that we hope to NOT throw the baby out and keep the bath water as congress is forcing NASA to do.  The result is a unique but feasible new vehicle design.  The Wings blog will detail features of each element of the system over the coming months.

When I was between design jobs in Dallas I sold cars for a while.  They taught us to “always be closing”, or ABC.  So the many projects all get a little time, and the mundane household tasks take the rest.  The Wyoming winds damaged my fence and gates, so I had contractors making some repairs.  At least the snows are tapering off and we are getting some shirt sleeve weather.
